The Malawi and Zambian Safari:
This safari offers the big game and real safari experience of Zambia’s magnificent Luangwa Valley and then drives across the border into Malawi to see the capital Lilongwe, swim amongst the tropical fish of the crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi, take boat safaris and walks in Liwonde National Park and then finish by enjoying the tea plantations of southern Malawi, staying in an old colonial house. Using good quality, very comfortable camps and lodges, with excellent game viewing and a real variety of people, sights and lakes, this trip is a great way to see two of Africa’s most fascinating countries!
Day 1. Arrive into Mfue Airstrip in the Luangwa Valley from Zambia’s capital Lusaka. Drive to Kafunta River Lodge for 2 nights.
Day 2. Game drives in Luangwa Valley – famous for its leopard sightings, especially on night drives using a spotlight, wild dog, lion, Thornicroft’s giraffe and many other herbivore species as well as great birding.
Day 3. Drive further south into the park, to the Three Rivers Bushcamp, a smaller camp giving a great safari experience: game drives, game walks and night drives are all possible. Great numbers of hippos and crocs can be seen in the Luangwa River and nearby pools. Bushcamp for 2 nights.
Day 4. Safari activities in Luangwa.
Day 5. Game drive northwards, back through the park to Kafunta Lodge, set overlooking the floodplain with many animals and birds to be seen from the front of your very comfortable chalet. Kafunta River Lodge for 1 night.
Day 6. Today you drive out of Luangwa, through the town of Chipata and across the border into Malawi. Take lunch and then continue onto Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi where you have a short city tour. Overnight city hotel.
Day 7. Leave after breakfast for the two hour drive to Lake Malawi and the boat ride out to Nankoma Island. Overnights Blue Zebra Lodge for 2 nights.
Day 8. Day to relax, swim and snorkel in the lake, take out canoes or walk the island.
Day 9. Boat trip back to the mainland and then drive to Liwonde National Park around 3 hours and to Mvuu Lodge for 2 nights.
Day 10. Game drives, walks and boat trips on the Shire River. Liwonde is a beautiful area of floodplains and palm trees, with great concentrations of hippo and crocs. Look for elephant from vehicles and boats as well as cheetah, lion and rhino. This park is managed by African Parks and its rejuvenation is one of Africa’s success stories. Day 11. Boat out of Liwonde and then drive to Thyolo around 3 hours, one of the most beautiful areas of Malawi set in the tea plantations. Huntingdon House is a magnificent home set in its own grounds and with individual and large rooms. Huntingdon House for 2 nights.
Day 12. Take a tour of the tea plantations and walk around the estate while visiting the tea factory and have your own tea tasting. Optional walk up the nearby Thyolo mountain renowned as a birding destination.
Day 13. Drive around 2 1/2 hours to Blantyre for your flight home.
