The Great Migration, Elephants, Chimps and Gorillas: 19 days in Tanzania and Uganda.
This safari combines the best of all worlds: the fabulous elephants of Tarangire, the unique beauty of the Ngorongoro Crater, great interactions with the Masai communities, the migration in the northern Serengeti with good chances of seeing the huge herds crossing the Mara River; then fly to Uganda across Lake Victoria to see the mountain gorillas, take the little used walk through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with a second gorilla trek and then safari through the game-rich and breath-taking scenery of Queen Elizabeth National Park to see the chimps and other primates of Kibale Forest National Park.
Day 1. Arrive into Kilimanjaro Airport, transferred to Ngaresero Lodge for 1 night.
Day 2. Drive to Tarangire National Park: elephants, lion, leopard and a host of other animals are present. 3 nights private mobile camp inside the park.
Days 3 & 4 Tarangire Game drives.
Day 5. Game drive out of the park to Mto Wa Mbu up the Great Rift Valley. Cultural visit to the village and then up into the Highlands of the Ngorongoro, to your permanent eco-camp, 2 nights Mysigio Camp.
Day 6. Early morning game drive into the Ngorongoro Crater: lion, hyena, buffalo, rhino, hippo and a host of other wildlife in a glorious setting. Afternoon Masai cultural activities.
Day 7. Drive out of the Highlands and down onto the Serengeti, game viewing all the way with picnic to Mbuzi Mawe Permanent Luxury Camp, nestled amongst the rocks of a famous Serengeti kopje where buffalo also make their home.
Day 8. Continue game driving northwards right through the Serengeti almost to the Kenyan border, to your luxury permanent camp 5 minutes from the Mara River, scene of so many of those famous river crossings where the huge herds of wildebeest and zebra brave the currents and crocs of the Mara River. Mara Under Canvas Tented Camp for 2 nights.
Day 9. Game drives looking for the big lion prides and also leopard and cheetah that are found in this lovely area. The river itself is also a huge draw with great birdlife, many hippos and crocs and giraffe, elephant and buffalo all to be found.
Day 10. Fly from Kogatende Airstrip in northern Serengeti across Lake Victoria to Entebbe in Uganda. Overnight Boma Guesthouse.
Day 11. Fly by light aircraft from Entebbe to Kisoro and drive into the beautiful highlands of southern Uganda. Visit the Batwa hunter-gatherers in the afternoon. 2 nights at Nkuringo Bwindi Lodge.
Day 12. Trek for the endangered mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Forest.
Day 13. Escorted walk through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, downhill most of the way, to Buhoma to the north of Bwindi. 2 nights Buhoma Lodge.
Day 14. Second gorilla trek to see a different gorilla family in the Buhoma area.
Day 15. Game drive into the Ishasha region of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lion. Overnight Ishasha Wilderness camp for 1 night.
Day 16. Morning game drive in the park and afternoon boat ride to see the wealth of animal and birdlife of the Kazinga Channel. Overnight Mweya safari Lodge for 1 night.
Day 17. Morning game drive in the Mweya area of Queen Elizabeth – elephants, giraffe, buffalo and giant forest hog can be found here, before continuing to Kibale Forest national Park. 2 nights Kibale Forest Lodge.
Day 18. Chimp trekking and other primates in Kibale. Afternoon bird walk in Bigodi Swamp – an excellent local community initiative with fantastic birding.
Day 19. Drive through the crater lakes region of Uganda back to Kampala and on to the airport for your overnight flight home.
Cost from US $12,690 per person sharing, plus 2 x $600 for gorilla trekking permits, based on a group size of 4 guests.
