Why East & Southern Africa?
Quite simply the finest wildlife viewing on earth! East and Southern Africa offer excellent infrastructure, friendly welcoming people and the classic safari experience. Huge numbers of big game from elephant to buffalo, giraffe and hippo, great herds of grazers and of course the predators: lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and jackal. You will see most, if not all, of these species on every safari we arrange, and the numbers and closeness with which you will be able to view them, will astound you.
Different countries and areas offer different experiences at different times of the year, but on any of our safaris you will have excellent game viewing, fantastic bird-watching, and a real insight into the beautiful surroundings and fascinating cultures of Africa – there is no place like it!
Why Journey Into Africa?
Because we create rare, distinctive travel experiences, designed with your requirements to the fore – all are bespoke and very personal. You will come back from Africa renewed, refreshed and having experienced something far more than a traditional holiday – for many, an African safari is life-changing!
Andrew and Shelly Beckett have both lived and worked in Africa in the safari industry, and Andrew led his first safari in 1986, and now has over 30 years of safari experience. He has an environmental science degree from London University and has a huge interest and love for Africa. From his first visit at the age of 18 he has been captivated by Africa’s animal and bird-life, by its huge horizons and wide open spaces, and by its people and cultures.
He firmly believes that the only way Africa’s wildlife is to survive is for it to ‘pay its way’ and photographic safaris are a major way to make this happen, where park fees, camping fees and viewing permits are a major source of foreign revenue.
Andrew has now led well over 100 safaris into Northern Tanzania, as well as safaris in Botswana, Zambia, Rwanda, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Kenya. As he says: ‘I set up Journey Into Africa to allow me to continue doing what I do best – showing visitors the best Africa has to offer, which in turn helps protects those areas and the wildlife I love the most. Come on safari and you really can do good, whilst having the experience of a lifetime!’

Journey Into Africa plans each safari meticulously, taking into account your wishes, time constraints and the time of the year, to give each visitor a better insight of Africa and far more than the standard safari. Whilst the focus is usually on getting the best of the wildlife, the whole experience of safari life is very much a part of the trip, and this includes other activities such as walking and cultural aspects interspersed in the game viewing, to make the whole safari hugely varied and satisfying.
Email or call Journey Into Africa and you’ll be getting advice from someone who really knows the area, who has spent time there with clients on safari and returns regularly; this is far removed from a lunch or dinner at each camp on a ‘familiarisation trip’, which is the extent of the experience of many office staff from many travel companies.
We recognise guides are a crucial aspect of any safari, and we use excellent local guides, many of whom have worked with us for many years. They speak excellent English, are very informative, accommodating, and very importantly, are fun to be with!
We can offer small, luxury camps, catering for as few as six clients for that intimately personal African adventure, to exclusive mobile camps and small boutique lodges and hotels. Upon booking and leading up to departure, we provide comprehensive travel information, including recommended clothing and luggage lists, to help you plan your safari and to build up the excitement and expectation.
We believe spending at least some of your time on safari ‘under canvas’, in a classic safari tent, is vital to a genuine safari experience. Where possible we avoid the large, chain hotels and lodges, and constantly strive to offer something different for our guests. This approach is certainly not the cheapest, but the attention to detail, the personalisation of the safari and access to our experience makes a Journey Into Africa safari very different to a standard trip.
